Did you know MTB armour is Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and it must meet legal requirements and be CE marked! Body Armour is Category II PPE which means it must be assessed, tested and certificated by a recognised Notified Body. What is BS 1621-1? Currently there is no dedicated standard for cycle body armour. Because a MTB rider is likely to experience similar force in a spill as a motorcyclist BS EN 1621-1 is used. What does testing include? Impact testing, with an average force of no more than 35 kN with the greatest force no more than 50 kN. Testing the hard shell for conformity of thickness, quality and construction. Innocuousness testing for materials to make sure there are no irritants in any areas there is direct contact with the skin. How do you stand? It is possible that not every piece of PPE called "Armour" currently in your store meets these requirements. Some manufactures and importers DO NOT carry out the required testing and certification. Their products may be CE marked but are only self certificated to Category 1, simple PPE. The impact protection has not been tested and cannot be guaranteed. All our Mace Body Armour products have been properly tested, certificated and CE marked and we can prove it! Are you confident that yours are?
